Keywords: Climate Change Non-manufacturing industry

Aeon Retail Co., a major Japanese supermarket chain, announced on November 11, 2011, that it would start switching to light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in spotlights and basic lighting systems at its 1,200 nationwide stores, including its national general chain store brands Aeon and MaxValu. The switch will first be made at stores in areas where there are concerns over electricity supply shortages this winter.

Aeon Retail estimates that replacing interior lighting with LEDs will reduce electricity consumption by about 15% at each store, and that switching to LEDs at its 1,200 stores will cut greenhouse gas emissions by 250,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2). This winter, the company is targeting a 10% reduction in electricity consumption from the FY2010 level by making various efforts at each store. Such efforts include: optimizing building lighting systems, temperature and air volume control for air conditioners at 20 to 24 degrees Celsius, strict management of refrigerated shelve temperature settings, and planned electricity control based on electricity consumption monitoring.

The company reduced 1,390,000 tons of CO2 in FY2010 and intends to reduce 1,850,000 tons from the FY2006 level by FY2012.
