Hachijo Island Introduces Electric Bicycle Rental Service Utilizing Green Energy

Keywords: Local government Renewable Energy Transportation / Mobility

The Revitalization Council of Hachijo Island, which is located in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Japan, started an electric bicycle rental service utilizing green energy on July 1, 2010. The program is being promoted as an ecotourism project applying green energy-based electric bicycles and coral breeding, in addition to construction and area revitalization projects supported by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.

First, the electric bicycle rental system was established, and eco-touring, in which participants can visit places like the island's coral nursery, using these electric bicycles was added to activities lists. The aim is that the island will be recognized as a tourist industry resort where green energy is applied, thereby increasing the number of visitors and creating jobs.

The electric bicycles use geothermal power and wind power generated by a windmill on the town hall, and are able to run for about 15 kilometers on a charge. Charging points are located at hot springs, supermarkets and other locations, and their use is included in the 2,500 yen (about U.S.$30) daily rental fee.
