Tokyo Gov't Registers 26 Companies as Global Warming Business Specialists

Keywords: Climate Change Local government

A total of 26 companies have been registered as global warming business specialists, it was announced on June 25, 2005 by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG). The TMG started a specialist designation system on May 10, 2005, under which it registers local firms that support the government's global warming measures and provide their knowledge and technologies to companies that emit a large amount of greenhouse gasses. This is the first series of registrations in the system.

The TMG not only publicizes the registered firms on its website but also introduces them to companies in need of such information, especially to those regarded as large energy consumers under the government's project launched in April 2002. In this project, the TMG orders enterprises emitting large amounts of GHGs, such as factories, offices and hotels, to make and submit environmental plans. The government checks these plans, gives advice and publicizes their plans and results.

The 26 registered firms include engineering enterprises, machine manufacturers and consulting firms, such as Tokyo Electric Power Co., Tokyo Gas Co. and Mitsubishi Electric Corp, all of which involved in the businesses relating to global warming countermeasures.

The registration is valid for one year and can be extended. The TMG accepts applications at any time, and registers firms if they meet certain requirements, such completion of short courses offered by the TMG for managers who are in charge of global warming countermeasures.
