Professor Masahiko Abe of the Faculty of Science and Technology at Tokyo University of Science, the University's venture company, Acteiive Corporation, and SATO CORPORATION, a company involved in auto-identification technology including integrated circuit (IC) tags, announced in 2011 that they have jointly developed a new product called ECONANO® Labels. These are the first labels developed that absorb and reduce the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions released when labels are incinerated.

Through the use of nanotechnology, a nano-sized CO2 absorbent was developed that is contained in the label adhesive, which absorbs the CO2 released at the time of incineration. ECONANO® labels can reduce the amount of CO2 emissions by approximately 20 percent compared to normal ones, and by up to approximately 50 percent when used together with SATO's liner-less NONSEPA® labels as ECONANO-NONSEPA labels.
