Nasu, a famous hot spring resort town in Tochigi Prefecture, has established a community council to initiate efforts to fight global warming. One of these projects now in place uses heat from the natural hot springs and water still hot after being used in resort spas for room heating and to preheat shower water.

At hotels and other buildings of the members, by introducing heat pumps to capture heat from the hot springs and used shower water, the town is able to reduce the use of boilers running on kerosene or heavy oil to supplementary use. These practiced have reduced fuel consumption, contributing to reductions in costs and in carbon dioxide emissions.

Sansuikaku Hotel, a council member, which switched its heat source for hot water from kerosene to wood pellets produced from leftover sawmill cuttings and extra timber from forest management.

Nasu suffered a serious flood in 1998. Considering that the extreme weather that caused it may have been linked to global warming, the town decided to promote efforts to combat global warming with these initiatives throughout the whole town.
