Onward Holdings Releases Biodegradable Men's Clothing

Keywords: Eco-business / Social Venture Manufacturing industry Reduce / Reuse / Recycle

Japanese apparel maker and retailer Onward Holdings Co. released its newly developed ecological clothing "BIO TECH JACKET" at major department stores nationwide on October 6, 2010. This is the second ecological clothing product in its BIO TECH series.

The recycling and reuse rate of fiber products in Japan is hovering around 26 percent in total: More than 690,000 tons of fiber waste is incinerated or buried annually. Compared to other daily commodities, the recycling of fiber products is not fully promoted. Onward Holdings, meanwhile, started developing the biodegradable clothing series under the company's concept that apparel companies, too, should be responsible for recycling their products.

Onward Holdings' ecological clothing series is certified by the International Oeko-Tex Association's textile research and test institution as products having no substances that are hazardous to human health and that leave no harmful substances in the soil. The newly released jacket, made of eco-friendly materials including fabric, thread, and buttons, is highly fashionable and comparable to ordinary clothing both in appearance and durability. If buried in the ground at the end of its life, the jacket will break down into water and carbon dioxide through the action of bacterial enzymes and turn back into soil in a year.
