Since 2009, Seed Co., a Japanese eraser manufacturer, has been selling the "Radarbio", Japan's first biomass eraser comprising microorganisms. Evaluation by the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method shows that the eraser reduces carbon dioxide emissions by about half when compared to conventional plastic erasers.
This biomass polymer-based eraser consists of materials such as plasticizer, natural rubber and filler, which are combined using Seed's proprietary technology, and is 94 percent petroleum-free. It has achieved 95 percent or more erasability, while at the same time lessening the environmental impact. Thus, the function of the eraser is in no way inferior to any conventional erasers.
As the main raw material is biomass, the product is susceptible to natural elements like ultraviolet rays. To prevent it from potential damage, such as becoming viscous, each eraser is placed in a lidded case vapor coated with aluminum.
