Japan's MOE Launches Pilot Projects that Allow Real-Time Visualization of GHG Emissions

The Japanese Ministry of the Environment (MOE) announced October 29, 2009, that it had accepted five out of 19 applications for its Model Project for Disseminating the Visualization of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions from Products/Services program. Each of the projects selected is aimed at encouraging people and business operators to use products and services that include ways that provide real-time data on GHG emissions resulting from energy consumption, and studying how wider use of these would contribute to reductions in emissions.

The program, which started in November 2009, is being carried out over three months, with sessions to report the results scheduled from late February to early March 2010, and the MOE is covering part or the entire budget of each project, up to a prescribed limit.

The applications accepted are as follows: "Program to Promote Visualization of CO2 Emissions by Office PCs and Other IT Equipment" (NEC Corp.), "Reduction of Environmental Burdens by Quantifying Personal Driving Habits Using a Vehicle-Version Flight Recorder" (KTsystem Consulting Co.), "Practical Environmental Lessons for Use in Elementary Schools by 'Visualizing' and 'Viewing' Energy" (Waseda Environmental Institute), "Promoting Energy-Saving Behavior by 'Visualizing' and 'Viewing' Electricity Use" (Nihon Techno Co.), and "Let's All Participate in Energy Saving Using 'Visualized' Energy Monitors and Remote Controllers" (Toshiba Carrier Corp.).
