Kyocera Corp., a major Japanese manufacturer of electronic components and photovoltaic systems, launched its sixth Environment and Safety Promotion Plan in the 2008 fiscal year to achieve its targets for reducing emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs). In addition to its existing goal of reducing the absolute amount of GHGs by 6 percent from 1990 levels, the plan establishes a new goal of a 44 percent reduction per unit of sales by fiscal 2010, which exceeds the voluntary goal of a 35 percent reduction set by the electrical and electronics industry.

Kyocera has also set a goal of a 50 percent reduction from 1990 levels by fiscal 2012 and a 65 percent reduction by fiscal 2017. To accomplish these objectives, the company will employ specific strategies such as implementing energy saving measures in the production process, installing solar power generation systems and adopting high-efficiency turbo refrigerators and fuel conversion at its facilities.

The plan, consisting of 13 items, sets specific goals for three years as well as targets to be attained in ten years. While the preceding plans covered only employees in Japan, the newly implemented plan is aimed at all 66,000 employees of domestic and overseas branches within the Kyocera Group.
