'Green-Power Certified T-Shirts' Tied to CO2 Emissions Cuts

Keywords: Climate Change Non-manufacturing industry Renewable Energy

Japanese consumers are being offered an innovative way to fight climate change, by purchasing "Green-Power Certified T-Shirts 2006," jointly designed and produced by the Japan Natural Energy Co. and Governance Design Laboratory Inc. These T-shirts have been on sale since December 9, 2005, following the success of the first series, which was sold in the summer of 2005. This initiative is part of what is called the "CO2free.jp Project," which aims to provide individuals with opportunities to contribute to the nation's efforts to reduse greenhouse gas emissions by six percent as required by the Kyoto Protocol.

A purchaser of the T-shirt can order 250 kilowatt-hours of green power generation, roughly equivalent to six percent of the annual amount of electricity a person will use in daily life in 2006. The power sources are biomass and micro-hydro power. Each T-shirt comes with a green power contract bearing a serial number and password. By registering the number through the program's website, the purchaser will be able to view and print the corresponding green power certificate after January 31, 2007, when verification of green power generation under this series is finished.

The project partners also launched the sale of green power certificates for individuals. There are two types of certificates--one for 2,000 kWh (the average annual household electricity consumption per capita) and another for 1,000 kWh. They are to be sold from January through December 2006 and are available only in Japan. Orders and inquiries are accepted at the following website: http://www.co2free.jp (only available in Japanese).
