Matsushita Battery Develops Micro Fuel Cell for Mobile Devices

Keywords: Eco-business / Social Venture Energy Conservation Manufacturing industry

Matsushita Battery Industrial Co. (MBI), a subsidiary of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., unveiled a direct methanol fuel cell for mobile devices at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) held in Las Vegas, USA, from January 5 to 8, 2006. This fuel cell has a capacity of 400 cc, about half the size of conventional models, has an extended operating life, and offers miniaturization and weight saving, which are essential features for mobility.

The new cell, with an average output of 13 watts (maximum 20 watts), runs for some 20 hours on 200 cc of fuel. The core technology used for downsizing is a new fuel supply method that delivers only the amount of fuel necessary for power generation. In addition, by also using a lithium-ion battery, the system can meet any sudden increase in demand for power.

The market for mobile devices such as laptop computers, cell phones and digital cameras has been growing as society becomes more interconnected with electronic devices. For about 20 years, MBI has been aggressively developing fuel cells as promising technologies for next-generation power sources.
