Toyota, Daihatsu Develop Eco-Friendly Painting Technology

Toyota Motor Corp. and Daihatsu Motor Co. announced on November 4, 2004, they had developed with Kansai Paint Co. a new painting technology that can drastically reduce emissions of carbon dioxide(CO2) as well as volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

VOCs are known to have carcinogenic properties and cause kidney disorders. They are also regarded as a source of pollution of air and water, groundwater in particular. Europe and the United States have already strengthened regulations affecting VOCs, and now Japan also faces this as an urgent task.

In conventional painting processes for vehicles, it is difficult to reduce both VOC and CO2 emissions at the same time. But the new painting technology is a breakthrough, the first time in the world that it is possible to reduce both VOC and CO2 simultaneously.

The technology is expected to reduce VOC emissions by about 70 percent and CO2 emissions about 15 percent, a major improvement over current technology. It will help reduce emissions from automobile painting to the lowest levels in the world.
