First Liquid Hydrogen Refueling Station Opens in Tokyo

A hydrogen refueling station for fuel cell vehicles was inaugurated at Ariake in the Tokyo Bay area on June 12, 2003. This is the second such installation in Tokyo and the seventh in Japan.

The Ariake Hydrogen Station was constructed by the Environmental Bureau of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, together with two companies chosen from a field of applicants, Iwatani International Corporation and Showa Shell Sekiyu. The project is part of the Hydrogen Refueling Station Pilot Program, sponsored by the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. This station, operated as a demonstration model, is the first hydrogen station in Japan that provides both liquid and compressed hydrogen.

In order to combat global warming and air pollution, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's Environment and Transportation Bureaus have been carrying forward a pilot project in cooperation with private companies to run fuel-cell operated buses on regular routes. The buses are scheduled to start running in the summer of 2003. The Ariake station will also serve as the main refueling station for these fuel cell buses.
