Tokyo Metropolitan Government Promotes Fuel Cell Bus Project

In accordance with a fuel cell bus project stipulated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Environmental Management Plan and the Principal Policies for the Reduction of Global Warming in Cities and the Earth, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government is promoting a "Fuel Cell Bus Pilot Project."

The Fuel Cell Bus Pilot Project is one of the measures being implemented to prevent global warming and air pollution. In partnership with private companies, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government will operate fuel cell buses on metropolitan government-run bus routes. The aims of the project are to collect data on fuel cell bus operation, to contribute to the widespread use of fuel cell buses, and to enlighten the public about these vehicles.

Once the companies that have been selected to participate in the project have manufactured the buses, they will lend them free of charge to the Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation, which will operate the service.
Toyota Motor Corp. and Hino Motors were chosen after responding to an open invitation to manufacture the buses. The two companies will jointly produce fuel cell hybrid buses (FCHV-BUS2) based on Hino Motors' CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) wheelchair-accessible large-size buses, modified for use on Tokyo bus routes. The parties concerned aim to start operation of the buses this summer.

The metropolitan government also publicly sought applicants for a Hydrogen Station Pilot Project, for which Showa Shell Sekiyu and Iwatani International Corporation were selected as the implementing companies.
