Sharp Corp., a major Japanese electronics manufacturer, launched sales of a see-through solar cell module (NA-BO95AA) on October 1, 2012. The module allows daylight to pass through and also generate electricity, enabling it to be used in building construction.

This new solar cell panel has none of the metal frames commonly used in regular roof-type solar panels. Instead, it adopts a layered-glass structure so that it can be used in place of windows or balcony panels just like ordinary glass building materials.

Light is able to pass through tiny slits in the cells, letting adequate amounts of light into the room while still generating electricity. The panels can also be installed as heat-insulating energy-saving components in various places, including as a window, balustrade, wall curtain, or roof overhang.
