NTT Smile Energy Inc., which provides a service for visualizing energy use, and Glamo Inc., which offers control devices that use IT networks, announced on May 31, 2012, that they would conduct a joint demand-response trial named "1kW LOVE." Targeting general households, the two companies would control peak demand for electricity use in the summer by controlling the use of home electrical appliances with a remote-control system.

When electricity demand is expected to surge, participants of the project receive e-mails asking them to save electricity at specific times. At the notified time, power to air conditioners is cut off with the remote control. The participants will cooperate positively for energy-saving as much as they are able to do comfortably.

The amount of electricity saved under "1 kW LOVE" will be visualized on the company websites. Under "My Page" for each participant, target amounts of energy-saving are set based on peak power over the previous two weeks. The participants can then see the amount of power used and saved. Visualizing the total of all participants' energy saving efforts as a so-called "eco-glass energy-saving station" encourages them to work together on power-saving.
