Tokyo Gas to Construct Smart Energy Network in Redevelopment Area of Tokyo

Tokyo Gas Co. announced on April 2, 2012, that it will launch a smart energy network to supply electricity and heat efficiently in the area north of the east exit of JR Tamachi Station in Tokyo's Minato Ward. The project will be carried out jointly with the ward.

The project will link three disaster-response facilities in Minato Ward (public service facilities of a utility, a hospital and a child welfare facility) to each other and to a central Smart Energy Center to be established in the east side of the area with heat, electricity, and information networks. The smart energy network will be the first to be built in an urban redevelopment area in Japan.

The Smart Energy Center will make use of renewable energies, such as solar thermal for heating and cooling, and improve energy security by continuing at least a partial supply of heat and electricity in times of emergency such as blackouts. The Center and utilities will work together, using information and communication technologies (ICT), to introduce and operate a centralized system--a Smart Energy Control and Management System (SEMS)--for managing and controlling energy supply and demand. Through the project, Tokyo Gas and Minato Ward aim to reduce carbon dioxide emmissions in the area by about 45 percent from the 1990 level. The system of the operation is scheduled to be managed by Energy Advance Co., the affiliated company of Tokyo Gas Co.
