Seven-Eleven Japan Co., a major Japanese convenience store franchiser, and JFE Engineering Corp., a leading Japanese engineering company, announced on October 24, 2011, that they will conduct joint thermal energy measurement technology demonstration tests from October 2011 to February 2014. For the tests, air-conditioning systems using geothermal heat will be installed in each of the three Seven-Eleven stores that will open in the Kanto region, Kansai and Kyushu. This is Japan's first model case conducted at convenience stores.

The two companies were jointly commissioned to carry out this project to demonstrate renewable energy heat measurement technology (measurement technology of geothermal energy use) by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).

Geothermal air-conditioning systems consume less electricity and emit less carbon dioxide (CO2) than conventional air-conditioning systems. Introducing the geothermal air-conditioning system called GeoTOPIA is expected to reduce both electricity consumption and CO2 emissions in the stores by about 30 percent compared with existing levels.
