Toshiba to Undertake Smart Energy Demonstration Project in Miyakojima

Keywords: Manufacturing industry Renewable Energy

Major Japanese electronic manufacturer Toshiba Corp. announced on October 27, 2011, that it had signed a contract with the city of Miyakojima after being selected to undertake system design for the "Miyakojima City Entire Island Energy Management System (EMS) Demonstration Project" and the "Miyakojima City Kurima Island Renewable Energy 100% Self-Supporting Demonstration Project," both part of the Smart Energy Island Infrastructure Development project sponsored by Okinawa Prefecture in fiscal year 2012. Miyakojima Island is in the Pacific Ocean about 300 kilometers southwest of Okinawa Main Island. It is a popular tourist destination known for its rich nature, history, coral reefs and white beaches.

The entire island EMS demonstration project in Miyakojima is to verify the optimum control system for energy consumption all over the island in order to investigate the most suitable operation and issues of renewable power generation according to electricity demand. Toshiba Corp. will examine system design, including an EMS consisting of a community energy management system (CEMS), a smart box that collects electricity consumption data from two hundred households, and a building and energy management system (BEMS) that controls energy flow in five buildings, in cooperation with local media company Miyako Television Co.

On Kurima Island, they will study the feasibility of becoming entirely energy self-sufficient by supplying 100% of the island's needs with renewable energy. They also intend to develop a system design by examining the EMS best suited for the island, while determining the optimal capacity and location of storage batteries to provide sufficient energy at peak-power demand times.
