On August 9, 2011, Fujitsu Ltd., an information and communication technology giant, announced that, in collaboration with Yokohama City, it had conducted a test to measure the effect of power-saving settings on 36 computers in the city's office building. The test used Fujitsu's smart power strips with built-in power sensors, which allowed the company to measure the amount of power consumed at each socket.

The test results showed that if low-power settings were applied to all of the office's computers, power consumption could be reduced by an average of 13.0 Wh, or about 20 percent, per desktop computer, and by an average of 1.0 Wh, or about 5 percent, per notebook computer. The reduction effect was found to be especially high for desktop computer displays, which saved 8.4 Wh, or 33 percent. This was mainly attributed to the decreased brightness of the displays.

Yokohama City is encouraging the use of energy-saving settings on computers in its office buildings. If implement on all of its office computers, the initiative could cut power consumption by an estimated 220,000 kWh, or about 14 percent, annually. This is equivalent to 86 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, or the annual power consumption of about 62 families.

Smart power strips can be used not only to measure power consumption but also to gain a clearer understanding of what works best to save energy and reduce peak electricity use.
