The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) announced on July 28, 2011, the selection of the city of Kitakyushu in Fukuoka Prefecture, western Japan, as the first model city in Asia for urban green growth.

This is part of the OECD's Green City Programme, which it has been working on since June 2010. Its aim is to assess green growth policies and their results in the model cities, report on them and publicize the information, and encourage more "green growth" throughout the world.

Kitakyushu was invited to the OECD International Conference, held in 2008 in Milan, Italy, as a representative of Japan, and there, its efforts as an environmental model city received high praise. The assessment of the city's green efforts will be publicized all over the world in the future. The city's aim is to establish its brand as an eco-model city.
