At the second Japan-Arab Economic Forum held on December 11-12, 2010, in Tunis, Tunisia, Japan signed Memorandums on Comprehensive Cooperation for Collaborative Projects in the Solar Energy Field with the Republic of Tunisia and the Kingdom of Morocco.
The Tunisian government will construct a power plant integrating a 20 to 40 megawatt-scale Gas Turbine Combined Cycle (GTCC) power plant and 5 megawatt-scale Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) generation facilities. Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) will supply CSP equipment, conduct its test operation, and provide know-how for its operation and maintenance. Contracted by NEDO, Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co. and Taisei Corp. will conduct a feasibility study for the project, which is slated for completion by the end of the first half of 2011.
The Moroccan government plans to introduce 2,000 megawatts in integrated solar power generation capacity by 2019 in an aim to increase the country's electricity self-sufficiency rate. As a key project for moving ahead with the plan, NEDO will provide technology cooperation to deal with grid destabilization that is expected to occur with a large volume of newly introduced solar energy. Both will launch collaborative research on the project.
