Recycling Companies Start Carbon Offsetting Under Japanese Domestic Carbon Credit System

Keywords: Climate Change Non-manufacturing industry

Two recycling companies, Kouei-Shouji Co. in Yokohama and Kato Corporation in Tokyo, started carbon offset programs that use domestic carbon credits in the spring of 2010.

The companies will purchase credits from Otokoyama Co. in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, through Carbon Free Consulting (CFC) in Yokohama. These credits were created when Otokoyama Co. replaced its boiler with a more efficient model, thereby reducing carbon emissions.

In April, Kouei-Shouji Co. started measuring and plotting its C02 emissions based on the monthly amounts of consumed electricity, gas, water, sewage, gasoline, and diesel at each of its offices. The company will offset 25 percent of the CO2 emitted from all of its business activities, and is expecting to offset approximately 11 to 12 tons of CO2 every month, or 140 tons per year. In March of the same year, Kato Corporation made its first purchase of domestic credits, worth 25 tons.

Both companies hope to implement various measures to help realize a low-carbon society and create a sustainable environment.
