Toyobo Co., a Japanese major spinning company, announced on December 17, 2009, that it has started cooperative distribution with Sumitomo Chemical Co. By conducting joint distribution operations, both companies aim to reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by shifting from truck to railway transportation and making contributions locally by using Tsuruga Port off-rail station.

Sumitomo Chemical transports raw resin by rail from its factory in Chiba Prefecture to the Toyobo Tsuruga factory in Fukui Prefecture, followed by deadhead travel back to Chiba, whereas Toyobo transports films by truck from its Tsuruga office to Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture, which is located near Chiba prefecture. Having confirmed that an efficient tie-up in procurement and distribution transportation would help reduce CO2 emissions, they agreed to start joint distribution.

Toyobo uses Sumitomo's return trains to transport half the volume of films that were to be carried by truck. This joint operation is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 65 tons annually. As it uses Tsuruga Port off-rail station to ship containers to the nearest freight train station by using truck, it could also revitalize the community.

The joint operations started in December 2009. Toyobo is now planning to increase the volume of railway transportation to ship films.
