Ricoh Launches Copier that Uses Biomass-based Toner

Keywords: Eco-business / Social Venture Manufacturing industry

Ricoh Co., a major Japanese office equipment supplier, launched ,sales of a multifunctional digital monochrome copier that uses biomass-based toner on November 18, 2009. The company developed the toner from biomass-derived materials, a world-first as a manufacturer's official supply item, for use in their multifunctional copiers.

While about 80 percent of conventional toner is made from petroleum-based resin material, the newly developed toner has a biomass content of 25 percent of the entire mass, including the resin. This leads to reduced petroleum use and a reduction of carbon dioxide emissions from burning the toner printed on used paper.

The copier can produce copies at the speed of 60 pages per minute when A4-size paper is fed into it sideways. Also, a biomass-derived clear plastic cover is used for the emblem on the main body of the copier.
