NEDO Updates Japan's Photovoltaic Technology Roadmap to 2050

Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) announced on June 8, 2009, that it would soon release a new version of its "PV Roadmap Toward 2030+," an update of its technology roadmap for solar power generation (photovoltaic, or PV) in Japan.

Since its release in 2004, the original "PV Roadmap Toward 2030" has been widely used as a guide for technological progress related to photovoltaic in Japan. The new review aims to accelerate the adoption of photovoltaic systems, clarify issues to be resolved, and explore possible future scenarios to reflect changes over the past four years. It also outlines issues that need to be resolved, and presents approaches that take the environmental impacts of industry and society into consideration.

The updated roadmap sets generation cost targets of 14 yen (U.S.$0.14) per kilowatt-hour (kWh) by 2020, equivalent to the cost of electricity for commercial use, and 7 yen ($0.07) per kWh by 2030, equivalent to the cost of general power source. The new roadmap adds a goal to reduce the generation cost to below 7 yen ($0.07) by 2050, and it is expected to contribute greatly to the future development of the photovoltaic industry.
