Ricoh Co., a major Japanese manufacturer of office equipment and electronics, announced on April 22, 2009, that it has set medium (by 2020)-term and long (by 2050)-term targets in three key areas: (1) energy conservation and prevention of global warming; (2) resource conservation and recycling; (3) pollution prevention. In fiscal 2005, Ricoh formulated its Long-Term Environmental Vision based on the "recognition that developed countries need to reduce the environmental impact to one-eighth the fiscal 2000 levels by 2050." These are numerical target settings in three areas to show a concrete path to the goal, and the first ones in business field.

For energy conservation and prevention of global warming, Ricoh aims to achieve a 30 percent reduction in total carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the group's lifecycle from fiscal 2000 levels by 2020 and an 87.5 percent reduction by 2050. For resource conservation and recycling, it will reduce resource use by 25 percent from fiscal 2007 levels in 2020 and by 87.5 percent in 2050. It will also reduce use of major raw materials of its products that are at risk of depletion, such as oil, copper and chrome, and find alternatives by 2050. For pollution prevention, the company will reduce the environmental impact of chemical substances by 30 percent from fiscal 2000 levels in 2020 and by 87.5 percent in 2050.
