Japan's Kyushu Electric Power Co. announced on October 1, 2008, the start of operations of the Nagashima Wind Farm, near the town of Nagashima on an island in the northwestern edge of Kagoshima Prefecture. The wind farm was built by Nagashima Wind Hill Corp., a joint venture of Kyushu Electric Power and Kyudenko Co. The 50,400-kilowatt wind farm consists of 21 turbines, each with blades measuring 92 meters in diameter and a power rating of 2,400-kilowatts, making this the largest wind farm in Kyushu.

The farm will generate approximately 100 million kilowatt-hours of power annually, which is enough to satisfy the electricity needs of some 30,000 households, and is expected to help cut carbon dioxide emissions by about 40,000 tons per annum compared to previous years.
