Tokyo Gas Starts Purchasing Biogas

On March 28, 2008, Tokyo Gas Co., a major gas supplier in Japan, released its basic conditions for purchasing biogas generated by outside customers and started purchasing biogas on April 1, 2008. The conditions also cover introduction of outside-generated gas into Tokyo Gas pipelines.

Biogas is a combustible gas produced from renewable organic wastes such as food garbage and sewage sludge. Biogas has been featured as a global-warming prevention measure, as it is carbon neutral (its CO2 emissions are offset by the renewable nature of the energy production). Resources for producing biogas exist nationwide in Japan.

According to the procedures and conditions set up by Tokyo Gas, the company buys only processed gas that meets company standards for pressure and other properties. The gas is to be directly fed into the company's pipes via equipment that includes a gas meter. The purchase price of the biogas is agreed on with each supplier through an individual contract, but is based on the company's regular gas pricing for the equivalent volume.
