Mitsubishi Electric Corp. of Japan announced on December 18, 2007, the launch of a new power-saving long-lasting spotlight series of light emitting diodes (LEDs). The newly released series named AKARI-LEDs --AKARI means lamp in Japanese-- has six models. The new models, which consume only 11 watts, are almost as bright at their center as halogen lamps and have an operating life of up to 40,000 hours.

With current efforts to reduce CO2 emissions and to prevent global warming, demand for energy-saving lighting equipment is increasing. While efficient inverter-driven fluorescent lamps are used in most offices and homes, halogen lamps with light reflectors are used in most stores to spotlight articles for display. Although, compared with incandescent lamps, halogen lamps have higher power efficiency and longer product cycle, fluorescent lamps have much higher power efficiency and longer life than halogen lamps. Therefore, replacement of halogen spotlights with more efficient spotlights has been requested as a method to save energy.

Making the most of luminous intensity distribution control technology, the new spotlights have a comparable spotlighting effect as halogen lamps, while consuming only 11 watts of power, thereby reducing CO2 emissions to 22 to 32 percent of those of halogen lamps. In addition, the lifespan of new lamps is 40,000 hours, while that of halogen lamps is 3,000 to 4,000 hours. The company plans to enter the store lighting market based on these new spotlights.
