Hitachi Launches Plan to Reduce Environmental Impact at its Data Center

Keywords: Eco-business / Social Venture Energy Conservation Manufacturing industry

Hitachi Information Systems, an IT applications and solutions company in Japan, announced on June 29, 2007, that it is starting to implement its "Environmental Data Center Plan." Using "virtualization" as a core technology to reduce its impact on the environment, Hitachi's goal is to cut the total electricity consumed by its data center in fiscal 2010 by 30 percent, the equivalent of a reduction of 13,200 tons of carbon dioxide emissions a year.

The company is using products from VMWare Inc., the world's leading provider of virtualization solutions, to simplify its server system by integrating the servers entrusted to the data center and optimizing resource allocation, such as memory and storage, which will reduce electricity use. It also plans to develop a more energy-efficient operation structure by improving the data center's operational methods.

Hitachi Information is also taking other measures to save electricity, such as introducing servers and other equipment that use less power, reducing standby power consumption, and utilizing low-power air-conditioners. Also, because allowing heat to build up in and around equipment reduces energy efficiency, the plan includes optimizing the layout of racks, equipment, and air-conditioners; improving the center's cooling system/hot air intake system to eliminate any heat reservoirs, as well as improving the rack cooling system, and providing education for air conditioner specialists on saving energy.
