Iwasaki Electric Launches Energy-Efficient, Long-Life LED Lamp for Road Security Lighting

Iwasaki Electric Co., a Japanese lighting products manufacturer, has developed a new type of light-emitting diode (LED) lamp for road security, incorporating 5-Watt white LED units with lenses, it was announced on March 2, 2007. The lamp has suitable light distribution performance for exterior lighting and went on sale in July.

Working jointly with Stanley Electric Co., a Japanese electric automotive equipment manufacturer, Iwasaki developed three types of the LED units (with narrow, medium and wide light distribution) by using different optic lenses. The combination of medium- and wide-type units in one package gives a lamp enough light distribution to perform well for roadside security lighting. The companies have applied for a patent. The device also takes advantages of LED features such as energy efficiency, which reduces carbon dioxide emissions, as well as longevity and compactness. The units are compact and designed to be attached to utility poles.

To avoid light pollution, the lamp is designed to completely cut light shining upwards (upward luminous flux zero percent), and as the lights does not emit ultraviolet rays, they will attract fewer insects than conventional lights. A 15-watt package provides the same luminosity as two conventional 20-Watt fluorescent tubes (40 watts in total), thus saving energy and further reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Maintenance is also reduced thanks to the long lamp life of 40,000 hours (at which point luminous flux is reduced by 70 percent compared to initial levels).
