Used Cooking Oil Helps Earth Day Tokyo Become Self-sufficient in Energy

Keywords: NGO / Citizen Reduce / Reuse / Recycle

A wide variety of events exploring sustainable societies are held across Japan on Earth Day, April 22. Earth Day Tokyo has been recycling used cooking oil since 2006, aiming at self-sufficiency with regard to energy used during the events held at its main venue, Yoyogi Park. This energy initiative is called the "Tokyo Oil Field Project--Recycling Used Cooking Oil."

In this project, the organizers collected used cooking oil from households and then recycled it to generate electricity for the stage and food stands in the park and to create fuel for buses. The amount of used cooking oil annually disposed of by households in Japan is estimated to be 200,000 kiloliters. The organizers are hoping to promote effective use of waste oil as an energy resource.

In 2007, Earth Day Tokyo collected 1,200 liters of used cooking oil thanks to cooperation from citizens who supported the initiative, and successfully achieved energy independence during the event. Used cooking oil has continued to be collected after the conclusion of the event at the Global Environmental Information Center located on the first floor of the United Nations University Building and at Kyoouji Temple in Shinjuku Ward.
