Coffee Shops Start Bring-Your-Own Bottle Service

Keywords: Eco-business / Social Venture Non-manufacturing industry

More and more coffee shops are now providing coffee or tea service when people bring their own drink containers to the shops. With public environmental awareness growing, the service is drawing attention as a new healthy lifestyle, in contrast to the disposable lifestyle that relies on drinks in PET bottles.

This service was originally planned by Zojirushi Co., a Japanese thermos bottle maker, and was dubbed the "My Bottle" campaign. In April 2006, six coffee shops in Tokyo and Osaka co-operated with the campaign. Each supporting shop places a green sticker at the entrance, saying that thermos bottles are welcome for coffee-to-go. As of September 2006, the service is also available in Fukuoka and Nagoya.

For example, Cafe des pres Hiroo in Minato Ward, Tokyo, offers a 400-milliliter blended coffee for 500 yen (about US.$4.34), almost half the regular price, to customers bringing their own bottles. Moreover, shops offering this service hand out "My Bottle" stickers designed by young popular artists.

Meanwhile, Zojirushi offers information about the shops providing this service, drink recipes and various events on its website. The company aims to further promote environmentally friendly lifestyle choices, such as carrying around a refillable "My Bottle," and to increase the number of participating shops in other cities.
