Tostem Launches 'CO2 Diet Certificate' for Energy-Saving Homes

On July 1, 2006, Tostem Co., one of Japan's largest housing equipment manufacturers, started providing "CO2 Diet Certificates" for super-insulated houses built using its Super Wall (SW) construction method. This service grew out of the company's newly developed quick conversion method for calculating CO2 emissions from home air-conditioning energy consumption.

The "CO2 Diet Certificate" shows the CO2 equivalent of power consumed by air-conditioning in an SW house; it also illustrates how much CO2 is being cut compared to the same-sized conventional house in the same location, with the same kind of family living there. Thus it shows the potential of the SW house to contribute to curbing global warming.

For example, if a SW house uses power for air conditioning equivalent to 2,430 kilograms (kg) of CO2 emissions annually, a conventional house under the same conditions will use the equivalent of 5,610 kg; thus the SW house achieves energy conservation equivalent a 3,180 kg reduction in CO2 emissions. The certificate records this reduction figure with a comment such as, "The potential reduction in CO2 is equal to emissions from about 14 round trips between Tokyo and Osaka by car."

The company developed this certificate service in response to a growing awareness about CO2 emissions in daily life.
