JAL Supports Greening Project in China through Donations of Frequent Flyer Miles

Keywords: Climate Change Ecosystems / Biodiversity Non-manufacturing industry

The Japan Airlines (JAL) Group announced on May 26 that it would launch an environmental protection initiative "JAL SKY ECO in China," in June 2006, in line with the group's Basic Environmental Policy and Environmental Action Guidelines. JAL decided to support a program of OISCA - International (Organization for Industrial, Spiritual and Cultural Advancement - International), the "Inner Mongolia Greening Project Against Desertification." JAL will be calling on members of the JAL Mileage Bank (JMB)--JAL's frequent flyer program--to donate their mileage awards to "JAL Miles For Eco."

In the project, OISCA will develop technology designed to curb desertification, ameliorate sandstorms, and create a green belt across the desert, while working together with local communities. The project has four goals: (1) to develop anti-desertification technologies in line with local conditions, (2) to encourage local residents, former nomads, to participate in environment-friendly industries, (3) to raise the awareness of local youth about activities for preventing desertification, and (4) to establish self-reliant and sustainable anti-desertification activities.

In the "JAL Miles For Eco" program, participating JMB members in Japan can donate their mileage awards in lots of 10,000 miles starting on June 5 (Environment Day) through June 30 (last day of Environment Month). Counting one mile as one yen, JAL will donate the equivalent amount in cash to the OISCA project. JAL also plans to call for donations to the campaign from JMB members in foreign countries.
