Asahi Kasei Group Wins Top Environmental Prize

Asahi Kasei Group, consisting of Asahi Kasei and its affiliates covering a variety of fields from chemicals and fibers to housing and health products, won the Grand Prize for the 15th Global Environment Award sponsored by the Fujisankei Communications Group. Aiming to promote the coexistence of industrial development and environmental protection, this award is presented to companies, local governments, schools and citizens' groups that have achieved outstanding results in environmental endeavors. This year, the Grand Prize winner was chosen for its achievement in reducing greenhouse gas emissions during the process of producing adipic acid, a raw material for nylon in fiscal 2004, by 50 percent compared to level of tfiscal 1990, the base year.

The Global Environment Award was founded in 1992 with special support from the World Wide Fund for Nature Japan, and so far 138 winners have been chosen.

A total of 11 candidates received various prizes in this year's awards. Among them were NEC Corp., which realized lead-free soldering and reutilization of used products; Tokyo Gas Co., which contributed to the practical application of fuel-cell cogeneration systems; Hoshino Resort, which achieved a 75 percent utilization rate for renewable energy at one of their resorts; and Wakayama Prefecture, which engaged in forest conservation activities more advanced that those called for by the central government.
