The Japanese Ministry of the Environment announced the winners of the environment minister's award fiscal 2005 for 24 activities for global warming prevention on November 18, 2005 and held the awarding ceremony on December 15. The prize, one of the measures to promote global warming prevention, started in fiscal 1998 to honor distinguished achievements by groups and individuals.

The prize-winning activities were in five categories: four in technological development and commercialization, five the introduction and spread of technology, eight in practical activities, six in environmental education and awareness-raising, and one in international contributions. Involved in these activities were 30 organizations and an individual.

Izawa Electronics Industry, Inc., a winner in the technological development and commercialization category, has developed and commercialized a device which can easily and safely stop engine idling when a car is waiting at traffic lights or in traffic jams, and also realized reduction of carbon dioxide emissions and fuel use of cars.

Shiga Prefectural Hachiman Technical High School, a prize winner in environmental education and awareness-raising, created an educational kit on how to make fuel from waste cooking oil. In one course, the students built a eco-cart that runs with the fuel, and through this deepened their understanding of recycling and global warming. The school also offered lecture services to elementary schools and participated in local events. Such experience-based environmental education was highly evaluated by the ministry.
