Office Attire Policy Helps Reduce CO2 Emissions by 14% at Oji Group Headquarters

Keywords: Climate Change Manufacturing industry

The member companies of the Oji Group, headed by Oji Paper Co., a major paper manufacturer in Japan, successfully reduced CO2 emissions by 97 tons at their headquarters as a result of their participation in "Cool Biz." This was a dress code campaign promoted by the Ministry of the Environment from June to September 2005 as a high-profile part of efforts to achieve a 6 percent reduction of greenhouse gases for the country. The total emissions of the headquarters offices were 14 percent lower than in the previous year, saving energy equivalent of 60 kiloliters of crude oil, worth about 5 million yen (U.S.$44,200).

In response to requests from the Energy Conservation Center, Japan (ECCJ), the company group adjusted temperatures of office air conditioners higher at the group headquarters, from 26 to 28 degrees Celsius during the summer months. The action resulted in the energy savings in cooling and electricity use calculated above.

Since December, the group companies have adopted a wintertime dress code called "Warm Biz" in their ongoing efforts to help curb global warming, by setting the room temperature at 20 degrees Celsius, five degrees down from the norm in the past. The new campaign will last until the end of March 2006.
