First Energy Service Co. Promotes Wood Biomass Power Generation

Keywords: Non-manufacturing industry Renewable Energy

The First Energy Service Co. (FESCO), a Japanese energy service company, started construction on the Hita Wood Power Plant, one of the largest wood biomass power plants in the country in Hita City, Oita Prefecture on July 14, 2005. The plant will start operation in November 2006 with an annual power output of 12,000 kilowatts using about 100,000 tons of wood chips as fuel.

FESCO formed a business alliance in May, 2003 with the Japan Wood Recycle Association, a non-profit organization with 82 member companies from around the country that supplies waste wood generated from logging. The alliance was established to develop biomass power generation and ensure a long-term stable supply of wood chips to FESCO through subsidiaries of the association's member companies.

FESCO aims to build about 10 biomass power plants nationwide based on this business alliance. The company has already started construction of plants in Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture in October 2004 and in Taishin Village, Fukushima Prefecture in May 2005.

These wood biomass plants are expected to contribute to building community-based businesses by recycling local resources and employing local people, as well as to curbing global warming.
