Green Power Certification System Expands

Japan Natural Energy Company (JNEC) announced on December 3, 2004 that it has concluded several new contracts for green power certification. This system markets the environmental value added when companies or other entities use renewable energy. It issues Green Power Certificates that stand for purchases of electricity generated by a renewable energy source. JNEC has been selling these certificates to corporations and other institutions in Japan since 2001. Japan for Sustainability has also adopted this system to cover the electricity used by its office.

In addition to a current contract with the Morigasaki Water Reclamation Center in Tokyo, JNEC signed contracts with two biomass generation plants; Jinsei-Farm Inc. in Hokkaido, which uses biogas produced by animal manure, and Ebetsu City Waterworks Bureau in Hokkaido, which uses biogas produced by sludge digestion.

JNEC also signed new five-year contracts for Green Power Certificate sales to four corporations, IBM Japan Ltd, Ricoh Co., Newport Ltd., and Kimura Electric Co. JNEC has thus concluded five new contracts in fiscal 2004, including an earlier contract with Tobu Railway Co. The new contracts represent a green power increase of 2.27 million kWh per year.

JNEC also signed short-term sales contracts for events such as the Eco Products 2004 exhibition, which showcased environmentally friendly products, a musical performance of "Ashita Kuru Kaze (Tomorrow's Wind") put on by the "Furusato (Hometown) Caravan," theater company and Christmas lighting in the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo.
