Keywords: Civil Society / Local Issues NGO / Citizen Reduce / Reuse / Recycle

The Global Sports Alliance (GSA) is a Japanese non-profit organization (NPO) established in November 1999 for the purpose of raising environmental awareness through sports. Its members include well-known Japanese athletes such as hammer thrower Koji Murofushi and speed skater Hiroyasu Shimizu, as well as sports fans around the world.

The GSA believes that sports are closely related to the global environment, and that sports lovers can contribute to environmental protection by raising the environmental awareness of the estimated one billion sports fans around the world. The organization is expanding its global network of sports lovers in cooperation with international organizations such as the United Nations Environment Programme.

The GSA has adopted an "Ecoflag" as the symbol of its activities, and hopes to create a society where future generations can enjoy sports safely.
Members and supporters convey an environmental message by flying the Ecoflag at various sports events. They also have been promoting the reuse of sports equipment and the development of a database presenting cutting-edge case studies of environmental protection efforts in the sports world.
