Ministry of Environment Provides Green Purchasing Case Study Database

Keywords: Eco-business / Social Venture Government NGO / Citizen Policy / Systems

Japan's Ministry of the Environment (MOE) has created a database of information about green purchasing activities that governmental agencies and corporations have posted on their own websites. On June 30th 2004, the MoE opened this database to the public through the website of the Green Purchasing Network (GPN) (http://www.gpn.jp/English/index.html). The GPN is an organization created in 1996 by government agencies and corporations for promoting green purchasing in Japan.

The MoE previously commissioned the GPN to establish a system called the "specific procurement information system" that collects and provides information about the procurement of eco-friendly goods and services (which comply with set criteria). This information was also released on the Internet through the GPN website.

The new database consists of three categories, the "information source database", the "unique effort database" and "green purchasing award case study database." These databases are expected to promote green purchasing by offering easy access to websites of informative groups and organizations.

Incidentally, the trends of advanced green purchasing in Japan will be presented at the 1st International Conference on Green Purchasing on October 6 and 7, 2004.
