Dowa Mining Co., a major Japanese nonferrous metal manufacturer engaged in the refining of copper, zinc and lead as well as in waste disposal and metal recycling, has announced that it will launch a recycling business in China by establishing a joint-venture with a local corporation. The joint-venture will start with a precious metal recycling business together with disposal of used electronic products, including electronic substrates.

In China, environmental awareness has been growing rapidly in recent years and various laws and regulations have been established in response to its drastic economic growth. With the aim of starting a recycling business in China, Dowa Mining conducted research and analyzed market trends and risks, and found an increasing demand among Japanese-affiliated companies for recycling and proper waste disposal services. In addition, the local administrative body added its request for Dowa to launch its business for the sake of protecting the environment. The company then decided to set up a subsidiary and build a plant in Suzhou, Jiangsu, where there is a high concentration of Japanese manufacturing firms.

A city-owned company in Suzhou will hold a ten-percent stake in the joint venture, as the local government's understanding and cooperation will be indispensable for a prompt start and further expansion of the business. The new plant will start operation in June 2004.
