On 30 June, 2003, the NEC Corporation demonstrated a prototype notebook PC that runs on an internal fuel cell.

NEC had exhibited a working notebook PC with an external fuel cell at the "nano tech 2003" exhibition in February this year, but the company has now built a fuel cell into the notebook computer. This was accomplished by increasing the output power of the fuel cell and by developing peripheral technologies to enable installation of the fuel cell inside the computer.

The compact, high-powered prototype fuel cell boasts the world's highest output density of 40mW/cm2, and achieves an average output of 14W and a maximum output of 24W. The development of this prototype was aided by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's project for developing technologies and products by applying nano-carbon technology.

The company plans to confirm the commercial feasibility of the built-in fuel cell notebook PC by the end of 2004, and put a product with a battery life of 40 hours on the market within two years.
