On July 23, 2003, the Japan Research Institute Ltd., together with the cooperation of 18 major energy and electronics companies including Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ebara Corporation, Matsushita Electric Industrials Co., and Fuji Electric Co., established E-cubic Co. as the first energy service provider in Japan.

Targeting food franchises, E-cubic will start by monitoring and diagnosing energy consumption of individual stores' facilities and equipment. It will then calculate energy consumption rates in order to set specific reduction goals, and finally provide a wide range of consulting services, including energy procurement.

E-cubic aims to encourage its clients to increase their profits through more efficient energy use, and plans to extend its business to target convenience stores, hotels, hospitals, etc.

In Japan, efforts to reduce energy costs and environmental impacts have been carried out mainly by manufacturers and the government. The establishment of this company is expected to encourage such efforts in the service sector, in line with trends towards electricity deregulation and diversification of energy sources.
