100% Water Recycling Flush Toilet on Sale

Keywords: Eco-business / Social Venture Environmental Technology Manufacturing industry Water

Japan's Fuji Heavy Industries released a stand-alone flush toilet facility that recycles flushed water, enabling installation without plumbing for water supply or sewer connections.

The newly-developed toilet hut is equipped with a system to purify and reuse flushed water using a mineral ion solution. The system saves water and discharges no untreated waste, features that lessen the environmental burden. After combining with a mineral ion solution, water circulates in processing tanks for oxidization and sedimentation of human waste, and the mineral ionized water is then treated for reuse as water for flushing. As mineral ions disinfect and also decompose the substances that give off unpleasant odors, the toilet can be used repeatedly and hygienically.

A wide range of applications are possible, including as a permanent toilet at recreational sites, campgrounds, golf courses and mountain lodges where water and sewer services are limited; as a temporary toilet at long-term construction sites and swimming beaches; as public facilities such as schools and parks; and as toilets at cottages and for personal uses. Ten types of huts are available.

The suggested retail price ranges from 7.1 to 8.72 million yen (about U.S.$60,000 to U.S.$73,000) excluding costs for optional equipment, delivery and foundation work. The company is aiming for total sales of 200 million yen (about U.S.$1.7 million) or 30 units for fiscal 2003, and intends to continue making product improvements and achieving sales of 1 billion yen (about U.S.$8.4 million) in fiscal 2006.
