Keywords: Eco-business / Social Venture Manufacturing industry Renewable Energy

Nippon Oil Corporation, the largest oil distributor in Japan, started the operation of a wind power generator at its oil terminal in Akita Prefecture on March 24, 2003.

The wind plant, with a capacity of 1,500 kW, is the largest single unit in Japan. It is expected to produce 3.5 million kWh of electricity per year, some of which will be sold to Tohoku Electric Power Co., and some of which will be used as a private power source within the Akita terminal.

Under its corporate philosophy, "Your choice of Energy," the company is venturing into the new energy sector with the aim of succeeding as a comprehensive energy company. The company is attracted to the wind power business as not only a clean power business using natural energy, it also enables the company to effectively utilize unused lands owned by the Nippon Oil Group. The company plans to expand its wind power business if promising sites become available.
