Ministry To Set Safety Standards for Fuel Cell Cars

In anticipation of full-scale marketing of fuel cell cars in 2005, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is planning to draw up safety standards by the end of this year for fuel cell vehicles, to ensure the safety of fuel tanks and motors under the Roads and Vehicles Law.

Toyota Motors and others plan to test market fuel cell cars at the end of this year. A project team consisting of members from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Ministry of the Environment, and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, expects 50,000 fuel cell vehicles to be on the road by FY 2010, and 5 million by FY 2020.
