Keywords: Climate Change Government

Japan's carbon dioxide emissions, a record high of 1.237 billion tons in fiscal 2000:The 2000 gross domestic emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane was 1.332 billion tons (carbon dioxide equivalent based on the latest normalization method), slightly up 0.2 percent from fiscal 1999, said Ministry of the Environment.

Carbon dioxide emissions, contributing to 90 percent of greenhouse gases, hit record high of 1.237 billion tons, up 0.4 percent from fiscal 1999. Majority of carbon dioxide emission growth is attributed to increase in household, and wide spread of electronic appliances in the civic sector - homes and offices. Emissions from homes sector (13.4 percent of the total carbon dioxide emissions in fiscal 2000) grew by 4.1 percent over fiscal 1999, and by 20.6 percent over fiscal 1990, compared with offices sector (12.3 percent ditto) growth of 1.7 percent over fiscal 1999 and of 22.2 percent over fiscal 1990.

However, emissions from industrial sector (39.9 percent ditto) such as plants grew by 0.9 percent over fiscal 1990, and shrank by 0.2 percent over fiscal 1999. Transportation sector (20.8 percent ditto) embracing automobile emission gases grew by 20.6 percent over fiscal 1990, and shrank by 2 percent over fiscal 1999.

Japan's emission reductions pledged under the Kyoto Protocol was 6 percent from the fiscal 1990 level; however, the fiscal 2000 gross emissions exceeded by 8 percent over fiscal 1990.
